Oromia Forest and Wildlife Enterprise (OFWE) is an autonomous fully government owned enterprise established with regulation number 122/2009, issued by the Oromia National Regional State Council in July 2009 under the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. The duties & responsibilities of OFWE, however, used to be carried out by the Bureau of Agriculture & Rural Development of the Oromia National Region Government until OFWE emerged out as an autonomous enterprise in year 2009. Its overall operation is directed, run and administered by the general director who is accountable to the Board of Management, which is composed of heads of relevant Regional Bureaus of the Oromia National Regional Government chaired by a minister.

OFWE by concession owns all the forest and wildlife resources of the Oromia region which comprises of a total area of 367,000 km2 and it is responsible to maintain, administer, & control all the forest and wildlife resources of the region. Towards serving its objective of maintaining and conserving the natural forest & wildlife resources of the region, OFWE has started a special participatory forest management project (PFMP) with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in the area particularly known as Belete Gera Forest as a pilot project. This pilot project covers more than 150,000 hectares of regional forest priority area (RFPA).

Currently, with the support of JICA, it has organized 16,260 smallholder farmers who live in its forest concession in the Belete Gera Forest RFPA in Jimma area into 125 farmers associations called WaBuB Cooperatives. The WaBuB cooperatives provide their agricultural produces mainly natural forest coffee beans, honey, spices and gums to OFWE which in turn sell to the international market at a premium market price the organic produces deserve.

OFWE in colaboration with JICA, has placed Forest Coffee Certification by Rain Forest Alliance, to monitor, control, improve and ensure the supply of quality organic forest coffee produces by the WaBuBs. This has helped to raise the trust and confidences of buyers/consumers to pay premium price for the natural forest coffee delivered through this supply chain there by drawing maximum benefit to the smallholder farmers and as a result enhancing the sustainability of the participatory forest management program.

OFWE has been supplying its forest coffee beans, honey and spices to the local exporters in the national market. Since 2010, however, it has started directly exporting natural forest coffee beans to overseas markets specially to Japan & Europe. The Ethiopian natural forest coffee distinguished by and renowned for its good aroma and unique Mocha test has a widespread acceptance and popularity throughout the world. These coffee beans are free from any chemical acidity and have no excessive pun
