Introduce
SUPAC AB in Sweden has developed a new range of intelligent vibratory tandem rollers and single drum rollers, based on a unique innovation, which makes it possible to vary the vibration amplitude continuously.
Vibratory rollers used for soil compaction must have high amplitude in order to ensure deep penetration. When the surface is hard the drum will bounce leading to the risk of damage to the roller and a poorer degree of compaction. To increase the compaction, amplitude, frequency and speed of these rollers can be adjusted automatically by means of a compacting meter and a computer, in order to obtain optimal compaction with a minimum number of passages, and to avoid bouncing and over-rolling.
When the roller is used for asphalt compaction, the amplitude can be set automatically by means of an infrared sensor in pre-selected interval. If the asphalt is too cold or too hot the amplitude is reduced accordingly.
The compacting meter and documentation system is standard.
The variable amplitude enables the contractor to use the same roller for compacting asphalt and for deep penetration when compacting soil. The number of rollers and spare parts kept in stock can be minimized.
The combined asphalt and soil functionality forms the basis of an extremely flexible, modular design. A complete range of 50 roller models, weighing between two and twenty-four ton, requires only 2-3 as many different parts of own design as a competitor needs for one roller.
The rollers are easy to use. After the operator has decided the degree of compaction required, he just continues to use the machine until the documentation system indicates that all areas have the desired degree of compaction.
Ideal weight ratio between the vibrating and non-vibrating masses, in combination with short distance between the drums and high centrifugal force, provides a very high capacity in relation to the total weight. All comparable tests have proved a higher compacting capacity than the competitors. The compaction capacity is in most cases > 30 % higher than standard rollers from the competitors.
The compact SUPAC design results in an exceptionally short turning radius. Steering on both drums gives the same advantages as an articulated roller. The possibility to increase the working width (crab steering) with 0- 50% gives many benefits.
The manufacturing cost of SUPAC rollers, including all the advantages above, is lower than that of competitors. For single drum rollers it is much lower.
After the initial design phase, ten tandem roller prototypes were manufactured and tested during a long time with good results. Since then, the design (AutoCAD) of the rollers has been further improved. The new design has not been produced, but parts as eccentric shaft and electronics have been tested.
