Founded in 1887 on a site that is now a multi-acre park complete with walking trail located next to the headquarters, springs became a publicly traded company in 1966 (nyse: Smi). Net sales in 2000 were $2.3 billion. On september 5,2001, shareholders approved a proposal to take the company private to support a strategy to grow the business through acquisitions and make other investments that are in the long-term best interests of the organization.
